Mind Over Meat - 'Cow Cycle'
Blown glass dome, glass paint, paper, shattered mirrored glass and wire
"What could possibly be wrong with milk?"
This piece is based around the dairy industry, which is a big part of the meat industry and in my opinion is somewhat crueler. The dairy cow is forcibly impregnated every year so she will produce milk intended for her calf. But instead the baby is taken away from the mother and the milk is used for human consumption. If the calf is male he is usually deemed useless as he can't produce milk and is killed at around 4 months old for veal. Female calves are destined for the same fate as their mother, a tiring cycle of pregnancy, separation from their young and continuous milking until the cow is overwrought and slaughtered for beef at the age of 4 to 5.
The cows natural life span is 20 to 25 years.
