This work is amazing, there is complicity between man and animal, mixed in absurd wars, maybe both will die, man by choice and the horse simply does not know what to expect. The scene is farewell, very good job in terms of technique and content, is pleased to find artists like you.
Nice painting. The dark haziness of this piece definitely conveys the grittiness of warfare on the European front. I think this image is particularly significant for its depiction of what would have been one of the last great conflicts in which horses and men served together. In this sense it comes across not only as a tribute to the courage of war horses who took part in WWI but of all the horses who have served in battle throughout man's history.
Although the scene around the horse and soldier represents the disorder of war, I find that they themselves are curiously relaxed in this image. The soldier himself is not dressed for battle or for moving through a war zone. This it would appear is a piece about war, but not one that is depicting conflict. However, it is hard to say if this works for or against the painting. Because of the contrast between the positioning of the characters and the tone of the piece,we get the feeling that the two stand a part. Then again, that might be the intention given the theme of the work.
Thankyou so much for the excellent critique! Yes, that was one of the things that appealed to me, the theme of horses in warfare. There is a lot of poignancy associated with their part that I think has been particularly highlighted with the film War Horse.
I wanted a strong contrast between the characters and the destruction around them which I see you have picked up on. It shows, I think, the humanity of those involved and that even in such a horrendous situation there can be some tenderness.
